FRIENDS OF PROBUS SURGERY

FORGE LINKS WITH LOCAL NEW BEFRIENDING SCHEME

The Patient Participation Group and Friends of Probus Surgery have teamed up with the Upper Fal Cluster Befriending Group, a valuable and exciting new scheme which offers anyone a FREE trained, selected and CRB checked Befriender who can do home visits or chat over the telephone.

Available to all sexes all ages, all areas

Scheme users and their Befriender will try to be compatibility matched

A shared stroll out, visit to shop, pub or theatre or other activities

Providing companionship for the isolated or housebound or elderly

Someone to have a chat and cup of tea with regularly or as a one off

Read a book for sight impaired

Make a new and valuable friend

The scheme operates under a church umbrella and Adult Social Care but is available to any faith or no faith and about companionship FOR ALL regardless of your religious beliefs.

Probus Surgeries Patient Participation Group (Probus PPG ) with the support of the Practice would like to ensure that the views of patient’s are fed into the Practice regarding the services they deliver and any changes or new services that are being considered.

We would like to contact as many patients as possible and would like to compile a list of email addresses so that the surgery can contact you every now and again to ask you a question or two.

LIONS CLUB SPECTACLE RECYCLING

The Lions Club of Truro was formed some forty years ago and ever since that time it has been involved with sight related projects one of which was collecting used spectacles, although initially this was only in a small way. However in the 1980’s two Lions Clubs, Newquay and Chichester set up collecting, sorting and distribution centres which became centres of excellence and today we have consolidated into one large centre at Chichester manned by Lions members and other volunteers and that is where we send our collections.

Today Chichester Lions handle over 300,000 pairs a year, which are mostly delivered to them in cardboard boxes handled for free by Parcelforce the carrier company. Chichester Lions use their considerable experience to select the items that are suitable for recycling and to sort them prior to despatch to France for grading and distribution. Last year the Lions provided over 50% of the total handled by Medico! These find their way to eye camps in Africa , India and Eastern Europe .

In recent years a new partnership has been formed with the Inside Out Trust, a Charity working with prisoners, and this has enabled facilities for grading spectacles to be set up in Portland and Durham Jails for use by the inmates. These have been sent to Ghana , Papua New Guinea , Nepal and Nigeria . In each case the glasses are sent directly to known or Lions club contacts in their particular region. We also supply other UK charities that carry out eye camp projects overseas. All are distributed under medical supervision.

We have recently upgraded our collection bins and we are delighted that one has been installed at Probus Surgery. It also doubles up for the collection of unwanted hearing aids which are also refurbished and despatched to our Lions colleagues in Third World countries for local distribution.

We are keen to expand our collection points so if you know of any business that would be willing to have a collection bin please let me know.
